In October 1862, following the Battle of Antietam just two weeks earlier, President Abraham Lincoln travelled to the Battlefield to survey the troops and to meet with Union General George B. Mclellan at his camp headquarters on a farm west of Sharpsburg and known locally as Mt. Airy. The historic photo of Lincoln meeting with General McClellan taken by photgrapher Alexander Gardner documents a group of people standing in front of the main house at Mt. Airy Today this farm has been lovingly and sensitively maintained as a National Treasure. Acquired by the family of the current owners in 1982, the property has been maintained with an eye on the property's historical significance while addressing the needs of contemporary comfort. The original manor house, constructed in 1813 remains essentially intact with all original mantels, doors and windows. The original floors have never been finished and a remarkable staircase is fully intact as it winds all the way to the third floor attic. This residence features tall ceilings, spacious sunny rooms and even a ballroom! Updated utilities and baths have been sensitively added to enhance the home's livability. The tenant house, constructed mid nineteenth century features a lovely addition that invites gatherings and provided very comfortable accommodations for the residents. A lovely kitchen and updated utilites bring this old home into the 21st century, The original carriage house is sited atop the stone root celler and domed ice house. This space has been re-created to be a comfortable guest house featuring cathedral ceilings and an updated chef's quality kitchen. Other buildings include the stone and frame bank-barn reconstructed in the early 20th century in the original location, as well as a recently constructed 34 foot by 100 foot metal building tucked out of view that accommodate the owner's thriving business. Given the property's National Tresure character, this sale is made subject to easements with the Maryland Environmental Trust.

Super stellar renovation of Historic Sharpsburg House! This down to the studs renovation preserved original details while providing outstanding insulation and structural improvements! Original floors and woodwork still intact. Lots of sunshine and fresh air from many windows! This neat property has so much potetntial as a large residence, home based busines location or even full-on comercial! Operated for years as Hammonds Store, the shop space has been lovingly preserved to provide prospective purchasers with an outstanding space to develop a gallery, shop, museum or other home based business. (Subject to Town approval) The shop space can also become a great room with space for a large kitchen and gathering space--a rarity in most old homes. The property fronts on Main Street next to a popular local restaurant and just a block away from a planned interpretive park presenting the impact the Battle of Antietam had on the residents of Sharpsburg in 1862. Antietam Battlefield is regarded as one of the best preserved in the United States. The lovely community of Sharpsburg takes great pride in its preservation. The town Museum, the new park and the acquisition of a house untouched after the battle are all harbingers of advancing interest in this preservation effort.
